The Montessori Method was developed at the turn of the century by Dr. Maria Montessori through her extensive work with young children. Montessori recognized how capable children are of absorbing information and abilities from their environment. By observing children and developing materials and techniques which foster the natural interests of children at different developmental levels, the Montessori environment provides a place where learning is personal and very satisfying.
Montessori schools encourage independent exploration of these specially designed materials and projects. In contrast to traditional educational methods, Montessori classrooms are highly individualized and follow the natural curiosity and interests of the children. Specially trained Montessori teachers, or guides, carefully prepare the environment to stimulate the interests of the children and develop particular aspects of the curriculum. Children then have the opportunity to explore this rich environment, learning important concepts independently and developing personal awareness of their own talents and interests in particular areas. |
